I have a '98 Ranger Custom. I too have had complements on it's great tone, and cool looks. I use it as my main electric, but still keep both of my strats handy. I like the comfort of the strat's arm contoured body, but find if I wear the Ranger low enough (just below the protrusion of my 46 yr old belly) that it's comfortable enough. I'm still really jacked on the tone of those Rio Grande pickups. I love the ability to go from the warm, round sound of the neck 'bucker, to the cut of the 'telly bridge pup. Fantastic!
I just had it in to my "pro" repair tech to do a set up. I was having trouble fretting out on extra wide string bends towards the high range of the fret board. He checked the neck relief and it looked fine, so he raised the action just a bit. It's plays OK now, but still is not as clear on the bends up in that range as my Am Std strat with the med-jumbo frets. I really don't play those bends way up there that often. I think the only drawback of my Ranger is the "vintage" style frets. My goal is to play down the stock frets and send it back to Houston for a factory re-fret with fatter wires in a couple of years. This guitar is definately worth it!
I think the idea of making the humbucker available in all pickup combinations via a concetric knob is very cool. I'd like to hear from someone who has done that.
By the way, glad to be here!!
